How Much Does a Concrete Driveway Cost in Calgary?

Concrete driveway in Calgary by Kinsmen Consulting

It's the first question almost every Calgary homeowner asks, and it's also the hardest one to answer with a single number. Concrete driveway pricing depends on a handful of factors that vary a lot from property to property, which is why flat per-square-foot quotes over the phone rarely hold up once a contractor actually sees the site.

Finish Type Is the Biggest Factor

Broom finish is the most common and most affordable option — a textured, slip-resistant surface created by dragging a broom across the wet concrete. Exposed aggregate reveals the decorative stone within the mix for a more natural look and sits at a higher price point. Stamped concrete, which imprints patterns like brick or stone into the surface and is then stained, costs the most due to the extra labour and materials involved.

Tear-Out and Disposal

If you're replacing an existing driveway, removing and hauling away the old concrete is a real cost on its own. Older driveways with thicker slabs or rebar that has to be cut out take longer to remove than a straightforward residential pad.

Base Preparation and Drainage

This is the part homeowners see the least and that matters the most for longevity. Proper base preparation — compacted gravel to the right depth, correct grading, and drainage that directs water away from the home — is what prevents heaving, cracking, and pooling down the road. Sites with poor existing drainage or unusual grading require more work here, which affects price but also determines whether the driveway lasts 10 years or 40.

Reinforcement and Mix Design

Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles and deicing salts are hard on concrete that isn't built for them. Air-entrained mixes and properly placed rebar reinforcement add cost upfront but are the difference between a driveway that holds up for decades and one that starts spalling within a few winters.

Site Complexity

Estate properties and acreages often involve longer driveways, steeper grades, or more complex access than a standard inner-city lot, all of which affect labour, materials, and equipment needs.

Why We Don't Quote Over the Phone

Because every one of these factors changes from property to property, an accurate quote requires an actual site visit. We'd rather give you a number that holds up once work starts than a rough estimate that changes halfway through the project.
